Now Let’s Hop Into Easter

One “eggcellent” way to celebrate Easter with the kiddos this year is to take place in Hop In DOP Saturday, April 19 from 10 a.m. to noon. Search for colorful Egg Posters in the windows of participating shops, where our businesses will have a special treat waiting for you! Make sure to stop by the Clock Tower for kid-friendly games, music, and an Easter Bunny meet-and-greet.

There are also will be an Easter Egg Hunt at Meadowbrook Park the same day; check out Kids Out and About for more info.

The actual Easter holiday is late this year—Sunday, April 20, 2025 (Passover begins Saturday, April 12). Which gives you plenty of time to lay in supplies and have the fun of making your own charcuterie Easter basket! If you’re not feeling particularly creative, * The Idea Specialists™ *recommend a quick google search for the kind of goodies you want to share with family and friends. They found lots great boxes and baskets at Harry & David, as well as full holiday dinners! Locally, Charcuterie by Carrie is an excellent option.

Our Local Library

This year’s theme for National Library Week April 6-12 is “Drawn to the Library,” and that’s because libraries have something that draws everyone in: books, magazines, computer stations, story time for kids, DVDS, online resources, and more. If you haven’t lately, stop by the Blue Valley branch of the Johnson County Library to see what all they have to offer.

Teed Up Next—The Masters

For some people, it just wouldn’t be spring in without the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. If you’re lucky enough to have the chance to attend—even if only for a practice round—take it! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Most of us, though, will get to enjoy the lovely azaleas and admire the prowess of professional athletes like betting favorites Rory McIllroy and Scottie Scheffler from the comfort of our Villas at Carrington Square living rooms. Here’s the guide for watching at home.

From shamrocks to the Sweet Sixteen, and whether it’s green beer and corned beef or “Courtside Punch” and chicken wings, the things all good March parties have in common are fellowship and food.

The Idea Specialists™ plan to take their shopping lists to the ALDI off Antioch Road on West 135^th Street  to stock up on staples and sweets. They have learned about so many good frozen foods and specialty items and gotten so many great recipe ideas from being members of the ALDI Aisle of Shame Community on Facebook! And of course there’s nothing “shameful” about it! The name really refers to the area in the center of the store that is packed with what the grocer refers to as “ALDI Finds,” a rotating stock of limited-edition, often seasonally themed items. It’s also a prime spot to score dupes of popular name-brand products, at a fraction of the price. Who wouldn’t cheer for that?
 

Gameday Gatherings

When it comes to watching the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, plan to have a few folks over to enjoy the roundball action in the comfort of your luxury apartment home, or take advantage of the wonderful spaces in the Villas at Carrington Square resident entertainment center to cheer on your faves with your neighbors and friends. Decorate your drinks and spear your appetizers (served in hoop-designed snack cups!) with these fun basketball-themed cocktail picks the Idea Specialists™ found.

Build Your Bracket

It always adds an extra level of excitement when you’re competing against friends, so get yourself a bracket going! There doesn’t have to be any money on the line—it can be all about the bragging rights! The Wearing Of The Green

While once thought of as primarily a day of Catholic religious observance to honor Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, in modern times St. Patrick’s Day is more about the wearing of green clothing and celebrating all things Irish!

This year the annual Downtown Overland Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place Saturday, March 8, beginning at 10 a.m. (rain or shine!) at 79^th and Floyd. Dress up your li’l leprechauns in green and celebrate at this family-friendly event! And plan to grab a bite and a pint after! Faith and begorrah!

Ramadan & Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr, a day celebrated by Muslims worldwide, marks the conclusion of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. In Ramadan, Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Qur’an, and fast from food and drink during the sunlit hours as a means of drawing closer to God and cultivating self-control, gratitude, and compassion for those less fortunate. It’s also a highly social time, as people invite each other to breakfast together and meet for prayers at the mosque.

In 2025, Eid al-Fitr is expected to be celebrated on either Sunday, March 30, or Monday, March 31, depending on the sighting of the moon. This day signifies the end of fasting and serves as a time for reflection, gratitude, and community bonding. Eid al-Fitr means “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” and two favorite items usually on the menu are Sheer Khurma, a creamy and flavorful vermicelli pudding, and ma’amoul, Lebanese date cookies.

The first thing they said is that Valentine’s Day is the perfect time for a glorious Mediterranean experience at Paros Estiatorio. This year, the restaurant’s special  Valentine’s Day prix fixe menu features everything from lobster pasta to roasted leg of lamb roulade. Choosing dessert will be tough….pistachio baklava? Crème brulée? Or the classic sokolata, a flourless chocolate cake?

It wouldn’t be February in Overland Park without the annual Valentine Gala, set this year for Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the Overland Park Convention Center. It promises to be a groovy time—and you’ll be helping keep kids safe!

And speaking of chocolate…..

Oh, my, but did the Idea Specialists™ come through for the Villas at Carrington Square with suggestions on this front! They hit the jackpot when they found this Food Network post on best buys for Valentine’s Day. Favorites?

First up is the Salts of the World Chocolate Collection; each of these chocolates celebrates a different country and features salt, ingredients, and a wildflower all native to that country. So cool!

Then there’s the Belgian Chocolate Covered Mini Doughnut Bouquet. Flowers are nice, but could anything really beat a beautifully packaged bouquet of chocolate-covered mini doughnuts?

Veterans Day

But before Thanksgiving comes Veterans Day, which honors U.S. veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

For the 17^th year, Black & Veatch is joining the city of Overland Park and other local community sponsors in hosting a free public, patriotic Veterans Day observance, set for Wednesday, November 6, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the company’s global headquarters on Lamar Avenue. Immediately after opening remarks and the national anthem, a flyover will give way to landings of CH-47 Chinook and UH-60 Black Hawk military helicopters (weather permitting), to be displayed along with other military and public safety equipment. There also will be a BeechNutz formation team flyover, along with patriotic music and dozens of military and community ground displays, including an Army recruiting trailer, Overland Park Fire Department ladder truck, Overland Park Police Department mobile command post, a bomb truck, SWAT truck, police canine handler and more.

More Upcoming Events

Even before Veterans Day there is all kinds of fun to be had in Overland Park in the month of November. Don’t take our word for it—check out this comprehensive event guide.

Through November 22, 2024, you can trade four canned goods for a free cactus at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Bring your non-perishable food donations to the LongHouse Visitor Center and take home a cute, water-conserving plant. So, dressing or stuffing? What’s the difference?

       Sprinkler Systems: We are finally done with this project and want to thank you for your patience with us during this time.

       Google Fiber Installation: We’re excited to announce that Google Fiber is coming soon! The installation has been complete and we hope to see you at our Pooch Plunge this Friday from 3-5 where Google will be here to answer any questions and introduce the service to you.

       New Roofs: New roofs are now being installed and we THANK YOU for your continued patience.  We are working as hard and fast as we can to have this complete no later than October 31^st.

LOOKING AHEAD TO SOMETHING LIVE & LOCAL

With fall comes football, and with football comes the fun of tailgating with family and friends!

But before we get to dishing the goods on tailgate goodies, the Villas at Carrington Square Idea Specialists™ want to talk about having some other kinds of fun in and around Overland Park.

It seems like there’s always something FREE to do in Overland Park! Amission to the Arboretum is free the first Tuesday of every month (always a good outing with nani and dadi!). Then, the third annual Hawkotberfest at Bluhawk is coming up Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. For FREE, the entire family will get to enjoy hayrides, face painting, balloon artists, inflatables, magic shows, and live music!

For something a little different, check out the International Lineman’s Rodeo Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the Overland Park Convention Center, beginning at 7 a.m. This free admission event attracts the best linemen from around the world to compete in events like the pole climb and the hurtman rescue (based on traditional job tasks). Hmm….maybe somebody in the family might be interested in this as a profession?

POPULAR GAMEDAY GOODIES

Now, back to football!  We know all of KC is rooting for our beloved 2 time back-to-back Superbowl Champs, the Kansas City Chiefs.  If you have the chance to attend a game at Arrowhead (GEAH) Stadium, we absolutely think it will be the experience of a lifetime.  You may see Taylor Swift although you may have a better chance of seeing her from the comfort of your apartment home at Villas at Carrington Square.  Either way, you’ll want to make sure to have plenty of tasty treats on hand to satisfy family and friends.

Google for gameday goodies and you’ll find that pickles are really hot this fall—especially when you serve them cold in this Duke’s Mayo Pickle Dip. The Idea Specialists™ love the idea of putting this on burgers and hot dogs, using it for a different kind of chicken nugget sauce, and of course just eating it on some chips or crackers. Looking for some ideas for good vegetarian party foods? Take a look at Spoon University for some great videos on spicy snacks—from vegan wings (easy vegetable pakoras) to vada pav (basically Indian veggie burgers, only way better).

Soft drinks, waters, beers, and spritzers are all cooler staples. Treat your guests to a little something extra with some restaurant-style mango lassi, which you can make ahead in a large lidded pitcher or non-glass beverage dispenser for easy transport. Masala & Chai has recipes for some other drinks that are sure to be crowd-pleasers (like the ice pumpkin cream chai latte!).

TAKEAWAY TIME

No time to get in your Villas at Carrington Square chef’s kitchen before the next get-together? No worries! Ruchi Indian Cuisine on Antioch Road has an incredible catering menu, with plenty of veg and non-veg options, chutneys, and homemade pickle (yes, we’re back to pickles again!). And, of course, gulab jamun for dessert! Yummy!

GAMEDAY MUST-HAVE

The Villas at Carrington Square Idea Specialists™ know from experience that while it’s all fun and games on the field, collegiate and pro stadiums don’t play around when it comes to fan do’s and don’ts. One of the biggies is making sure that any bag you take in with you meets guidelines.

These days you can go to Amazon and spend about as much or as little as you’d like on a bag. The ET website has the skinny; the Specialists are going with the imminently practical LOXOMU crossbody bag. (But this acrylic WJCD bag that comes in SO many colors and has a removable chain looks like so much fun! Maybe both?)

Of course there’s a Visit Kansas City website with its own section of things to do, as well as its own list of FREE things to take advantage of in KC.

Given that Villas at Carrington Square is a pet-friendly community, the Idea Specialists™ love the proximity of the seven-acre fenced off-leash dog area at Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park.

And If you haven’t been already, now might be the time to pop across the river to Penguin Park on Vivion Road in Kansas City, Missouri. With everything from a 26-foot kangaroo slide to a 23-foot penguin to play inside of, this fun and playful place is a fantastic kids’ playground!

Getting ready also means scoping out those sometimes wicked drop-off and pick-up lines, and making sure everybody has got the supplies they need.

And want.

According to the National Retail Federation’s Annual 2024 Back-to-School Survey, families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of $874.68 on clothing, shoes, school supplies, and electronics. The NRF’s survey said they expect $38.8 billion to be spent on school supplies in the United States—the second-highest figure on record.

Got somebody about to start their freshman year of high school? Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t know something. Most people are nice and will talk to you if you talk to them. For things to wear be casual, don’t dress up crazy for school. Lastly, keep in mind that learning is important but that’s not what school is all about, have fun and make friends.”

Celebrate The Fourth Of July At Corporate Woods Founders’ Park

Plan to celebrate our great nation with your family and friends by enjoying an evening of concerts, food. and fireworks at the Overland Park Star Spangled Spectacular at Corporate Woods Founders’ Park on July 4, 2024.

Festivities will begin at 5 p.m. with live music– Green Shoebox Band, Howard Mahan, The Champagne Band, and Justus West—and food trucks. Everyone is encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, food, water, and coolers (but no alcohol or pop-up tents); and, dogs are allowed but must remain on a leash at all times. The mesmerizing fireworks display will light up the night beginning at 10:05 p.m., choreographed to patriotic music and creating a dazzling spectacle you won't want to miss!

Note: Visitors can enter Corporate Woods Founders’ Park at any time on Independence Day, and parking is available in any open Corporate Woods parking lot.

National Picnic Month

Sometimes summer sunshine just screams out for a picnic, which is probably why the American Bakers Association picked July as National Picnic Month way back in 1952.

The Villas at Carrington Square Idea Specialists™ did a little research and found that the word picnic comes from the French word piquenique, which eventually came to refer to mid-18th-century al fresco French dining.

In today’s world, a picnic can be something as simple as sandwiches and soft drinks on the sun deck by the sparkling Villas at Carrington Square pool, or as over the top as an Insta-worthy luxury picnic delivered by companies specializing in creating memorable experiences. Picnicking In Overland Park

There are plenty of places for you to plan your own picnic in Overland Park, including by the water at Regency Lake Park and the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, both conveniently located to the Villas at Carrington Square. Visit Overland Park is a great resource for info on both of these locations and more!

Grilling & Chilling

Of course the Idea Specialists™ are going to have some suggestions for you when it comes to picnic-appropriate food and drink!

First, though, check out this awesome Picnic Time combo BBQ Kit Cooler from Target they found. In addition to its large capacity for ice and drinks, it features an eight-piece stainless steel grill set that includes everything from tongs and a spatula to a cutting board and corkscrew. And because of its shoulder strap, it’s imminently portable—thus perfect for a picnic at the community poolside barbecue area. Sweet!

Before you head out to wherever you’re going to spread your picnic blanket, whip up a to-go pitcher of this luscious Summertime Rosé Tequila Sangria. And depending on what you’re in the mood for, maybe one—or four, or a lot more—of these Pioneer Woman picnic foods. Cowboy caviar, loaded potato salad, chef’s salad on a stick, and blueberry bars all will go with whatever you decide to grill—ribs, chicken, burgers, YUM.

Summer’s Bounty

The Villas at Carrington Square Idea Specialists™ will absolutely or sure be heading back to the Overland Park Farmers’ Market for some more homegrown tomatoes now that they’ve seen this Garden & Gun magazine article for delicious recipes for everything from tomato pudding to cracker salad. They’ll be taking that salad, and some green tomato chowchow, on their picnic, for sure.

Join us for a magical evening under the stars at Overland Park’s newest 1 million square foot location.  Bluhawk is located at 7951 W. 160^th Street, Overland Park, KS  66223! They are having an outdoor screening of the beloved classic, Barbie. Bring your own chairs and get comfy in the grassy area between “Jinya” and “Of Course” for a night of fun, laughter, and nostalgia.

Google Fiber Installation is HAPPENING NOW …

You may have noticed several flags around the grounds.  Please do not disturb or remove the flags as they are designated utility markings for Google Fiber.  They started installation at our community on June 24^th.  Watch your email for notices of when they will be entering your home.  You will not be required to sign up for Google Fiber but installation in your home is required by ownership.  They shouldn’t require access to your home for very long.  They have asked us to remind you that they will require that you clear the area in your master closet so they can access the existing cable box to expedite installation.
